This course introduces students to the interdisciplinary field of surveillance studies, focusing on the theories, principles, and legal frameworks governing intelligence and security activities. Students will explore various surveillance technologies, their applications, and the challenges they pose in legal, political, and ethical contexts. Emphasis will be placed on analyzing surveillance practices, evaluating their societal impact, and developing strategies to balance security with human rights protections.
At the end of the course, Students will:
- Define key concepts related to surveillance and intelligence collection.
- Identify and evaluate surveillance technologies and their applications in security contexts.
- Analyze the political, social, legal, and ethical implications of surveillance practices.
- Critically assess real-world surveillance practices and propose policy recommendations to enhance security while safeguarding individual rights and societal values.
